Why can’t a person try to be decent? Seems to me, it takes a lot more work trying to scam someone than doing things the right way. My ‘give a damn meter’ for people like this swings way into the red after finding out they tried to cheat me. I draw analogy to Wild Bill Hickok, the original holder of the “dead man’s hand.” Old Bill never tried to cheat anyone; he just happened to have his head in the way of a bullet while holding this hand. The guilty party, on the other hand, was a cheater who lost to Bill, and town people stretched his neck for this deed done to their hero.
ACES AND EIGHTS: THE DEAD MAN’S HAND
Face up card in poker world, what most see,
Don’t look too close inside cause it ain’t me.
More like the hole card, attitude not planned,
Might be aces and eights, the dead man’s hand.
No bottom dealing, play the whole game fair,
Trick I’m dealt is plenty, throw pasteboards square.
Deck will not issue, flush upon demand,
Success hard enough; cheating cannot stand.
Legitimate gamble, rules honest show,
Lying your strategy, then best you go.
Artifice found, flames are so quickly fanned,
Underhanded scammers from this sport’s banned.
If wily schemer shows off bona fides,
Countenance says nothing; blunt match it hides.
Maneuver ruse into unseen places,
Upfront response, hustler pays in aces.
Authentic calling card is grand desire,
Sincere betting placed in a world on fire.
Straight forward wager, on the level brand,
Crooks often palm themselves, the dead man’s hand.
